26-33 (2005-2007) 2nd Year Head Coach Lexington Paul Laurence Dunbar

After undergraduate school and his playing days at Kentucky State University, Coach Redd was undecided about his future. He spoke with his mentor and ex-college coach Matthew Yates who informed him there may be an opening at Frankfort High School. After a few individual instruction sessions, Coach Scott Chalk offered him his first coaching opportunity as varsity assistant as well as Freshman and Junior Varsity Head Coach. As a first year freshman coach in 2001, Coach Redd compiled a record of 15-1, winning the district title as well as reaching the freshman regional tournament semi-finals. After completing 2 successful years under the guidance of Coach Scott Chalk, Coach Redd joined the staff at West Jessamine High School under the guidance of his former college coach and mentor, Matthew Yates. After one season at West Jessamine in Nicholasville Kentucky, Coach Redd was approached with the opportunity to become the Head Coach at Louisville Shawnee High School Magnet Career Academy. During the inaugural season (2004-05), his team compiled a competitive record of 9-21. As a first year head coach, with an inexperienced group of sophomores and two seniors; the team demonstrated its worthiness throughout the season. They won the All “A” 6th Region Championship and made an appearance in the All “A” Sweet 16 Tournament (with a 6 point loss in the first round by the eventual champs and State Ranked University Heights Academy). They also captured the district runner-up title as well as 6th Region Semi-finalist (which hasn’t been accomplished in 15 years), losing to eventual Regional Champions Pleasure Ridge Park High School. After one season at Shawnee High School, the opportunity to coach at Paul Laurence Dunbar presented itself. During his inaugural season at PLD (2005-06), the team was projected to win only 5 games for the season. The roster consisted of inexperienced freshmen, sophomores, and 3 seniors. The team managed to become not only district, but regional contenders as well. They captured a 4th place finish in the Defender of the Station Christmas Tournament, 2006 District Runner-up, and 2006 11th Region quarter-finalist. They compiled a competitive 12-17 record with 6'5 Senior Forward Deontay Wright (whom had not played since his freshman season) making the Kentucky All-Star Team. Coach Redd coaches the game of basketball through his experiences as a former player. He believes that “whatever you put into something is what you will get out of it”. A CHAMPIONSHIP attitude is developed through hard work, dedication, discipline, loyalty and a FAMILY fun atmosphere. Coach Redd feels that fundamental skills, both defensively and offensively, are key components to having a successful championship program.
Coach Redd is a 2001 Kentucky State University graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education with a minor in Recreation. In 2005, he received his MA in Learning Behavior Disorders (K-12) from Georgetown College. On a personal side, Coach Redd is the father of daughter Bryanna Nannette born April 28, 2006.
